@nicole Ironically, I will now drown in my salty, salty tears.

Most of the gaps in the self-hosting guide (docs.joinmastodon.org/user/run) are easy to fill from context. I hit two gotchas while following the recipe:

1) You can't set up nginx before you generate your SSL certificate, because nginx will justifiably complain there's no certificate there. Instead run certbot standalone first: github.com/mastodon/documentat

2) nginx will return nothing but 502s until you give it access to the mastodon user folder: lond.com.br/2018/07/13/running

Had my last voice lesson of the year before intubation temporarily makes me sound like 85-year-old Elza Soares. Relearning how to sing has been one of the joys of this whole transition thing and I recommend it to absolutely anyone in such circumstances. teachers are pretty great about offering sliding-scale lessons if you need them.

@nicole Also they told me 1.5g! Am I on the extra-restricted bad kids diet because they know about me and pickles?

Ah shit. Mimi Parker, RIP.

Friends, it’s hard to put the universe into language and into a short message, but

She passed away last night, surrounded by family and love, including yours. Keep her name close and sacred. Share this moment with someone who needs you. Love is indeed the most important thing.

I've been through ICWA provisions a few times because of the work LawBox does for the Texas Children's Commission, and this year all their docs are prefaced with "Oh, btw, everything below could be imminently upended at any point."

I love all you The Dream of the 90s Web is Alive people, truly I do—I mean, I am one of you, I have a website that's 27 years old and runs on Debian, a Makefile, and my anger at Emacs—but for that very reason I promise it is OK to try to think through what happens when a somewhat janky bit of software starts to be unable to depend on the goodwill of a self-selected user base. We've been here many times before, for both good and bad.

@nicole Okay fine by "no sodium" I really mean "they won't let me eat the whole jar of kimchi any more."

Setting this thing up could have been worse! Okay! This is like day six with no sodium and it's been no better than any of those preceding, sweet dreams.

Basic models of flocking behavior are controlled by three simple rules: 1) separation: avoid crowding neighbours (short range repulsion); 2) alignment: steer towards average heading of neighbors; 3) cohesion: steer towards average position of neighbors (long range attraction). With these three simple rules, the flock moves in an extremely realistic way.
