I love how so much of the AI debate is on things like:

* Will AI take people's jobs?
* Will AI destroy creativity?
* Will AI take over the world?
* Will AI be used to make people poorer?

And not:

* Will corporations that use AI get rid of people's jobs?
* Will corporations that use AI destroy creativity?
* Will corporations that use AI try to take over the world?
* Will corporations that use AI make people poorer?

Because these LLMs and machine learning systems and so forth aren't just wandering around randomly out there - they're owned by corporations. The corporations are the ones putting them to use. The executives that run those corporations are the ones making the decisions to pay people less, to increase their profits, to make creative people act as subeditors for LLMs.

It's the corporations, and the ethics-free systems that govern them, that cause these things. They're the ones pushing to have more AI.

The rest of us would be happy just having a bit more humanity in the world.

Forty-five birthday candles this year. I might regret how many decades it took for me to come out of the closet were it not for the fact that I never believed it could happen at all. 🎂

😇 Forever an opsimath. 😇

okay so I said before that despite having no trans characters and, as far as I know, no trans creatives working on it, #Silo is the absolute TRANSIEST thing I’ve seen this year. and this week’s episode took it to… TRANSIESTEST? wow.

I love it so much.

I’m ready to go Clean.

Back in Chicago for the first time since 2015. I’m here to host a team meetup, but also to visit with friends I haven’t seen since my last visit, and, therefore, haven’t ever really seen _me_. 🫥

Trying to figure out the posing in this photo. Like, what was the photographer going for exactly?

Trans Selfie

Last week, when we launched Pocket 8 on iOS, I had the opportunity to wear a suit for the first time in a decade, and an EYE PATCH. (A tradition for Pocket releases; also, I have a stye).

Now I just want to wear this combo all of the time. 🥰

I have been asked to stop using the word MANSPLAINING.

It probably is time to be more politically correct.

In the future I will be using the clinical diagnosis CORRECTILE DYSFUNCTION.

You’re welcome.

I’ve been homeless before, but never homeless like these people. I can’t even imagine.

Went to a queer bar for the first time on Saturday. Ended up getting pushed off the dance floor by a couple who took offense to something about my presentation. 🤷‍♀️ After half an hour in the corner with the trash cans, a dude spit on me; I got the hell out.

It’s ❤️ to have friends for nights like these: I ended up calling one and having a good, solid two-hour talk that kept me from tipping into a depressive fugue.

Some snaps of SF street life from my walk; it sure put things in perspective. 😕

Pulling out my favorite threadbare doggy photo for my threadbare self.

Pocket 8 for iOS just passed through App Store review. I was bracing for a fight (no particular reason, just a lot of years of hard-won experience), but now this May 16 release is 100% in the hands of my team to win or lose.

As a computer hobbyist, I often worry how good my passwords are. I've never seen anything to describe how important it is. This chart and the research is super. My hat off to HIVE!

A reminder about gun massacres in the USA:

Back in 1979 the Cleveland Elementary School shooting was so shocking that people wrote songs about it.

It was one of two spree shootings that year: there were a total of just 26 shootings in the decade 1970-1979.

Brenda Spencer killed two adults and injured 9 children.

Yesterday (May 6th) there were THREE comparable spree shootings in the USA: the day before that there were FIVE.

There have been 14 spree shootings in the first week of May, 2023.

My sister just got this tattoo (cute!) and named it Jinchou, which I didn’t know was Japanese for penguin (also cute!) but when I looked it up I found it’s written人鳥, that is, person-bird. The bird just out there doing its business like a person. That’s the jinchou, that’s the penguin. Now you know.

Basic models of flocking behavior are controlled by three simple rules: 1) separation: avoid crowding neighbours (short range repulsion); 2) alignment: steer towards average heading of neighbors; 3) cohesion: steer towards average position of neighbors (long range attraction). With these three simple rules, the flock moves in an extremely realistic way.
